Question: I would like indirect but creative ways to help my learners consolidate the verb tenses I have taught them. Could you suggest some?

Answer: Since 2011, when we started collaborating with Linguaglobe, there have been a number of activities where we suggest ways of consolidating grammar structures. This time, we will work with an activity which can be used to consolidate the Past Simple.

TITLE: "Re-living Yesterday"

LEVEL: A2+, age 12+

SKILLS: Writing, Speaking, Introspective thinking, note taking.

TIME:   10 - 15 minutes

MATERIALS: None needed

IN CLASS:

1. To get your learners ready, ask them to stand up and, raising their arms above their head, to stretch up high. Then, ask them to inhale and exhale three times.

2. Now, tell them to think of the day before and to try to reconstruct, in writing and in short phrases, everything they did the previous day, e.g. went running, walked to school, helped a friend, etc. Tell them to try and focus especially on things they did and which made them feel good, positive, accomplished.

3. Then, ask them to answer the following questions about each one of the activities they were able to reconstruct. Tell them to do so in writing even if you are planning on conducting a  Speaking activity:

*When did each start and end?

*What were you doing? [Learners might use Past Progressive.]

*Were you alone or with someone else?

         *How did you feel?

*How do you think the other person felt (if you were with

          someone else)?

4.Give time to your learners, as this is an introspective activity and they need to "go inside" and reconstruct their thoughts and, especially, their feelings.

5. Then, either ask your learners to talk about their "Yesterday" or to write about it, using their notes.
