Language teachers are often afraid of teaching pronunciation, but not always for good reasons. People think pronunciation teaching is the same thing accent training, about getting rid of an ugly accent and replacing it with a beautiful one. We take prejudices about accent from society at large and we import them into our profession, even though they have absolutely no relevance to intercultural communication. Here are a selection of the kind of pronunciation myths I am referring to:

“Our aim is to help learners to sound like native speakers.”

Καθώς η διδασκαλία και η εκμάθηση εξακολουθούν να προσαρμόζονται στις συνεχώς μεταβαλλόμενες συνθήκες, θέλουμε οι καθηγητές, οι μαθητές και οι γονείς τους να αισθάνονται ότι είμαστε δίπλα τους.

Spring ’23 Cyprus International Publishers Exhibition

Saturday, 11 March 2023  09:00-17:00

Semeli Hotel

After two years of isolation and only online events, the time to meet in person has come. A new venue - the Semeli Hotel - will stage the Spring ’23 Cyprus International Publishers Exhibition on Saturday, 11th of March 2023.

Publishers & examination boards will present innovative products they developed during the Covid-19 pandemic to bring a fresh air in class and online.

ANSWER:  There are two parts to this answer: (1) The first has to do with involving the learner ‘cognitively’ in the content of the recorded material, and  (2) the second part,  with preparing learners for what they are to listen for in order to complete the activity’s task.  Here is an example of a listening activity:

LISTENING (from Upstream, pre-intermediate, Express Publishing, p. 75)

Answer: It is true, it's about this time of year where we need a "change". The activity below may be what you need.

"FROM A to Z"Level: A2 - B1, 13 - 14+

ANSWER:  Now that summer is here and many of us will be spending time near the sea, we can use a series of video activities to introduce useful words and, at the same time, further sensitize our learners about the importance of recycling plastic.

QUESTION:  As language teachers, the ‘authority’ in class, we have many opportunities to give feedback to our learners.  My question is “How can we encourage our learners to give us feedback on how much they value what we ask them to do and how they feel when interacting in class?”
