Recent developments in the field of neuroscience have, very satisfactorily in my view, confirmed certain tenets that have been current in the area of English Language teaching for some time now: namely, that a positive classroom environment aids learning and memory retention and that a negative or threatening climate has the opposite effect. I would like to explore these and other points a little further, looking firstly at some of the insights from neuroscience and then seeing how they can be applied both to the learning situation and to the choice of teaching materials.

You’re teaching at the proficiency level, so of course, you take it for granted that they (your students) understand what you’re saying.

Well, don’t!

Half the time they may not understand anything. If they did, they would ask questions when you say: “Does anyone have any questions?”

Children love to sing songs. Think about the time when you were a child. What was your favorite song? What songs did you learn at home and at school?

Traditional children’s songs introduce children to the world around them. They do this in a fun and developmentally appropriate way. In the US, preschool age kids learn about farm animals like cows, ducks and sheep as well as their sounds, like moo moo, quack quack, and baa baa through the popular, traditional song Old MacDonald Had a Farm.
